Lyons escape Wellesley with 13-12 victory after holding three-goal halftime leadApril 11, 2006 WELLESLEY, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team led 8-5 at halftime and held on for a narrow 13-12 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory at Wellesley College Tuesday afternoon. The Lyons move above the .500 mark to 5-4 overall with a 3-1 league mark, while Wellesley falls to 5-8 and 0-3. The hosts took an early 5-3 lead on the strength of back-to-back goals from junior Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional) before Wheaton responded with five unanswered tallies to close the half. Senior Caitlin Tierney (Wellesley, MA/The Rivers School) contributed a pair of goals during that stretch. Wellesley began the second stanza similar to the first, this time using a 6-1 run to capture an 11-9 lead with 15 minutes remaining. Wheaton sophomore Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) knotted the game at 11 with a goal at 9:52, and Dimick and sophomore Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) netted the next two tallies to give the Lyons a 13-11 edge with five minutes on the clock. Senior Katie Moseley (Denver, CO/Wheat Ridge) brought the hosts within a goal at 3:45, but Wellesley's bid to send the game into overtime fell short, as Wheaton was able to run out the clock and escape with the one-goal decision. Lyon sophomore Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) led all scorers with five goals. Dimick finished the game with a hat trick, while junior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) accounted for 11 saves. For Wellesley, sophomore Amber Evans (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) had four goals while Moseley added three. Brownstein and senior Audrey Gill (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) was credited with two tallies each. First-year goalkeeper Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) made 14 stops in the loss. Wheaton returns to action Thursday afternoon for a non-conference game against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Wesleyan University. The Lyons' third home game of the season is set to begin at 4:15 p.m. on Keefe Field. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/31/07. |
