Women's lacrosse falls in battle of NEWMAC powers at SpringfieldApril 8, 2006 SPRINGFIELD, MA- In a rematch of the last four New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship games, the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team fell, 13-8 against Springfield College on Saturday at Benedum Field. The Lyons had a 14-game regular season conference winning streak snapped, losing such a contest for the first time since April 15, 2003. Wheaton is 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the league, while the Pride is 5-4 and 3-0. Springfield rattled off three straight goals in a little under 10 minutes of the first half to claim a 4-1 lead before the Lyons attempted to come from behind. During an 8:44 span that stretched into the second period, senior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) notched a hat trick to counter the Pride's trio of tallies, and freshman Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) brought the Lyons within 7-5 as 26:34 remained in regulation. However, the hosts netted six straight goals during a 15:46 stretch to corral a 13-5 edge. With less than five minutes left, Wheaton tacked on the final three markers, as seniors Molly Cronin (Brownsville, VT/Woodstock Union) and Caitlin Tierney (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) and sophomore Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) each found the back of the net. Coit's three tallies led the Lyons, while junior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) stopped 13 shots. For Springfield, junior Ashley Martell (Billerica, MA/Billerica) had three goals and two assists, while classmate Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, MA/Acton-Boxborough) tacked on three goals and an assist. Junior Lisa Thomas (Whitman, MA/Weymouth) added two goals and an assist, and sophomore Kristin Vaccaro (Southington, CT/Southington) made 10 saves. On Tuesday, Wheaton travels to Wellesley College for a 4:30 p.m. NEWMAC contest.
