Six-goal run propels Wheaton past NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke, 15-6April 1, 2006 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College broke open a 4-3 game by tallying six straight goals as the Blue and White went on to defeat Mount Holyoke College, 15-6 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse contest Saturday on Keefe Field. Wheaton improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while Mount Holyoke fell to 3-5 and 0-2. Behind three straight goals, including two from senior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland), Wheaton held a 4-1 lead by 20:37 of the opening half. Mount Holyoke seniors Caitlin Taylor (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) and Lindsay Oldershaw (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson) tallied during the next eight minutes to bring the visitors within 4-3, but the Blue and White rattled off 11 of the game's final 14 goals, including the next six over a 16:50 span that stretched into the second half. Sophomore Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) netted a pair during the run, while Coit, senior Caitlin Tierney (Wellesley, MA/The Rivers School) and sophomores Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) and Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) each scored once. Coit later sandwiched her third goal between two Mount Holyoke tallies before Wheaton scored four straight. Jurczak, freshman Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) and Tierney all scored within a 1:45 span, and freshman Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) gave Wheaton a 15-5 lead with 6:24 remaining. Taylor netted her second goal to complete the scoring. Coit led Wheaton with four goals, and Jurczak tallied a hat trick. Dimick, Hurd and Tierney each finished with two goals, while junior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) made 13 saves. Taylor paced Mount Holyoke with two goals and three assists, while Oldershaw tacked on a pair of markers. Senior Lauren Mulcahy (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional) stopped 13 shots. Wheaton hits the road next Saturday at Springfield College for a rematch of last year's NEWMAC Tournament championship game.
