Wheaton stays close with sixth-ranked Bowdoin before fallingMarch 29, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team took an early lead and trailed nationally-ranked and undefeated Bowdoin College by just one goal early in the second half before succumbing, 11-4 during its home opener on Wednesday at Keefe Field. Now 3-3, the Lyons received 28 saves from junior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School), the most by a Wheaton goaltender since 1999. The Polar Bears, who are sixth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, moved to 6-0. The Lyons scored the game's first two goals during a 2:03 span, as sophomores Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) and Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) tallied to put the hosts up, 2-0 by 22:51. Bowdoin countered with its first goal just 22 seconds after Dimick's marker and knotted the game at 18:31. Hurd scored again at 10:06 to give the Lyons a 3-2 lead, but Bowdoin freshman Christina Denitzio (Martinsville, NJ/Pingry School) responded with a goal 56 seconds later and assisted junior Kate Donoghue's (Plandome, NY/Friends Academy) go-ahead tally with five minutes remaining in the half. When the period ended, Bowdoin held a 4-3 edge, its narrowest halftime lead of the season. After the Polar Bears scored five minutes into the second half for a 5-3 lead, Wheaton senior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) scored 26 ticks later to pull the Lyons within one at 5-4. However, Bowdoin pulled away by scoring the game's last six goals, including five within a 4:19 span. A different Polar Bear connected on each of Bowdoin's final six markers. Hurd scored twice for the Lyons, who were outshot by a 52-14 count. Denitzio led Bowdoin with two goals and one assist, while Donoghue and sophomores Bridget Keating (Short Hills, NJ/Kent Place) and Grace Moore (Groton, MA/Lawrence Academy) each scored twice. Freshman Stephanie Collins-Finn (Menands, NY/Albany Academy) made four saves. The Lyons open their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate on Saturday when the Blue and White plays host to Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
