Lyons capture convincing 15-3 victory at Smith in NEWMAC openerMarch 26, 2006 NORTHAMPTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team opened its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate in strong fashion Sunday afternoon, as the Lyons defeated Smith College, 15-3 to improve to 2-2 on the season. Suffering their third straight loss, the Pioneers fall to 1-4 overall. Today's outcome was decided by halftime, with Wheaton jumping out to a commanding 11-1 advantage at the intermission. Senior co-captain Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) led all scorers with five goals, while junior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) allowed just the one score through 30 minutes of play. Coit scored Wheaton's first three goals of the afternoon during the game's opening 2:51, giving the visitors a 3-1 lead. Smith tallied its only goal of the half 2:21 into the contest, as the Lyon defense stymied the Pioneer attack while rattling off nine consecutive goals to close the stanza. Coit finished with four goals in the half and sophomore Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) added two scores. Hurd and senior Caitlin Tierney (Wellesley, MA/The Rivers School) each finished with two goals in the win, while junior goalkeeper Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) yielded just two scores in the second half. Freshmen Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) each posted their first collegiate goals. Konig and Boll were credited with three saves apiece. Wheaton concludes its five-game road swing with a non-conference contest against Bridgewater State tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/31/07. |
