Big second half lifts Wheaton to season-opening win over Puget SoundMarch 13, 2006 WELLINGTON, FL- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team gave Mary Jacobs her first collegiate coaching victory Monday afternoon against the University of Puget Sound, as the Lyons turned a 5-4 halftime lead into a 13-6 victory over the Loggers in their season opener. Puget Sound falls to 0-3 overall. Senior co-captain Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) led Wheaton's attack with two goals and a pair of assists, while senior Caitlin Tierney (Wellesley, MA/The Rivers School) and freshman Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) accounted for three goals apiece. Rounding out the multiple-goal scorers were sophomore Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) and freshman Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) with two tallies apiece. Sophomore Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) completed the scoring, while senior Kate Weston (Bedford, MA/Bedford) turned in a huge first stanza with six ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) made her first collegiate start a memorable one, finishing with 11 saves while limiting the Loggers to just two second-half goals. Wheaton looks to remain unbeaten against nationally-ranked Ursinus College tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Ursinus enters the game ranked 18th according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).
