Wheaton women's lacrosse squad honored for academics, Lyons land six players on IWLCA National Honor Roll

August 4, 2005

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse squad was recently honored for its academic standing by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), as the Lyons earned a team grade point average of 3.05 en route to being named to the National Academic Team Award program. In addition to its team laurels, Wheaton landed six of its players on the IWLCA National Honor Roll.

The awards program salutes those institutions that have achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the second semester of the 2004-05 academic year. The IWLCA also honors student-athletes achieving junior or senior standing academically, serving as members of their school's varsity lacrosse team and having achieved a GPA of at least 3.2 for the spring semester.

Leading the way for the Lyons was senior Vanessa Pisano (Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard), who was one of 14 players on the list to have also earned IWLCA All-America team accolades. Classmate A.J. Vasiliou (Middletown, CT/Mercy) along with juniors Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland), Rose Jackson (Indianapolis, IN/North Central), Caitlin Tierney (Wellesley, MA/The Rivers School) and Kate Weston (Bedford, MA/Bedford) rounded out the Wheaton honorees.

Pisano earned a bachelor's degree in political science last May after recording a 3.66 term grade point average, while Vasiliou posted an outstanding 3.91 GPA on her way to a degree in chemistry. Coit had a 3.58 mark in pursuit of a psychobiology degree and Jackson a 3.75 standing in international relations. Tierney claimed a 3.50 average in her quest for an economics degree, and Weston turned in a 3.66 mark while majoring in English.

The Wheaton team was led by fifth-year head coach Rebecca Begley, who recently relinquished her women's lacrosse duties while retaining her responsibilities as head field hockey coach. The Lyons captured their third straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title following a perfect 6-0 season. Reaching the championship game for the fourth successive year, Wheaton ended the season with an 11-5 mark.
