Lyons finish conference slate perfect for second consecutive season following 14-11 win at MITApril 23, 2005 CAMBRIDGE, MA- The 16th-ranked Wheaton College women's lacrosse team finished its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season with an unblemished slate Saturday, as the Lyons defeated host Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 14-11 in rain-soaked conditions at Jack Berry Field. Improving to a perfect 6-0 in the conference for the second consecutive season, Wheaton extended its NEWMAC winning streak to 16 games. The Lyons also reached double-figure victories for the sixth consecutive season with a 10-3 record, while the Engineers fall to 6-4 overall and 2-4 in the NEWMAC. Junior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) secured Wheaton's win this afternoon with three consecutive tallies, including scoring the game's final goal with 53 seconds left in regulation. MIT senior Kelsey Presson (Needham, MA/Needham) gave the hosts a 1-0 edge, but the Lyons answered with three straight tallies for a 3-1 lead. Presson then scored two more goals to knot the game at three midway through the half. Wheaton once again reeled off three unanswered goals for a three-goal margin, as the visitors carried a 7-4 advantage into the half. The Lyons extended their lead to 9-4 to begin the second stanza, but MIT refused to quit and managed to score five of the game's next six goals to trail 10-9 with just under 13 minutes to play. Freshman Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) and Coit then created some separation by combining for three straight tallies for a 13-9 lead. The Engineers cut their deficit back to two goals, but it wasn't enough as Coit rounded out the scoring with less than one minute remaining. Seven of Wheaton's 14 goals on the afternoon came on free position opportunities. Following Coit's three-goal performance was two goals apiece from senior co-captain Vanessa Pisano (Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard), senior Kyla Graves (Warner, NH/Kearsarge Regional) and first-year athletes Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) and Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School). Pisano's two goals raised her career tally to 272, which stands fifth on the NCAA Division III goals list. Presson led all scorers with four goals and an assist, while sophomore Mary Harding (Wilton, CT/Phillips Exeter Academy) and freshman Kaitlin Kamrowski (Garden City, NY/Garden City) added two goals each. Wheaton senior goalie A.J. Vasiliou (Middletown, CT/Mercy) and Engineer sophomore goalkeeper Hee Jay Kang (Old Tappen, NJ/Bergen County Academy) each finished with 11 saves in their respective nets. Wheaton concludes its regular season Sunday with a home game against third-ranked Amherst College at 12:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/31/07. |
