Lyons pull away from Bridgewater State in second half to post 12-5 victory

April 16, 2005

NORTON, MA- The 10th-ranked Wheaton College women's lacrosse team maintained its home unbeaten streak Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons turned a 3-3 tie into a 12-5 victory over local foe Bridgewater State College in a non-conference game at Keefe Field. Wheaton saw its overall record improve to 8-3, while the Bears fall to 2-4 on the season.

Wheaton and Bridgewater State played nip-and-tuck in the opening half, exchanging their first six goals for a 3-3 deadlock at the half. Lyon senior Kyla Graves (Warner, NH/Kearsarge Regional) gave the hosts a 1-0 edge eight minutes into the contest. Graves posted two of Wheaton's three goals in the frame, while the Bears received individual tallies from junior captain Corinne Baker (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) and sophomores Erica Murphy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and Kathryn Sweeney (Norwood, MA/Norwood).

Baker gave Bridgewater State its only lead of the game not even two minutes into the second half, but after that it was all Wheaton, as the Lyons reeled off six unanswered goals for a comfortable 9-4 advantage with 20:12 to play. Wheaton's six-goal outburst transpired in just over a five-minute span. The Bears made the score 9-5 on a Murphy goal with 8:58 to play, but the hosts proved to be too much down the stretch, scoring the game's final three goals in the last 4:46 of regulation to capture the win.

Junior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) led all scorers with four goals, while freshman Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) and senior captain Caddie Jackson (Deerfield, MA/Deerfield Academy) had three and two goals, respectively. Graves finished with two goals and one assist and freshman Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) added one goal and an assist.

Baker and Murphy paced Bridgewater with two goals each, while senior captain Kim Carlson (Westwood, MA/Westwood) was credited with two assists in the loss. Senior goalkeeper A.J. Vasiliou (Middletown, CT/Mercy) registered eight stops in net for the Lyons, while senior captain Lauren Mazzola (Westwood, MA/Westwood) stayed busy over the course of the game with 23 saves.

The Lyons will take to the road on Tuesday, April 19 for a conference contest at Babson College. Game time in Babson Park is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
