Wheaton's 11-goal outburst in first half leads to 15-7 win over Wellesley

April 12, 2005

NORTON, MA- The 10th-ranked Wheaton College women's lacrosse team sprinted out to an 11-0 halftime advantage and never looked back Tuesday afternoon, as the Lyons handed visiting Wellesley College a 15-7 loss in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at Keefe Field.

Extending its conference winning streak to 14 games, Wheaton saw its overall record improve to 7-2 with a 4-0 mark in the NEWMAC. Suffering its seventh loss in nine games, Wellesley falls to 3-8 on the season and remains winless in conference play at 0-3.

Senior All-America attack Vanessa Pisano (Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard) had a huge first half for the Lyons, accounting for seven of Wheaton's 11 goals with five tallies and two assists. Finishing the game with six goals and two assists, Pisano now has 264 career goals and 313 points, placing her tied for seventh and tied for 25th, respectively, on the NCAA Division III all-time scoring list.

Wheaton held a 6-0 cushion midway through the half and eventually put the game out of reach with five goals in the final seven minutes of the stanza. Senior Kyla Graves (Warner, NH/Kearsarge Regional) and junior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) posted two goals apiece, while freshmen Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) and Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) had one tally each.

Spearheaded by senior goalkeeper A.J. Vasiliou (Middletown, CT/Mercy), Wheaton stymied the Wellesley attack by holding them to three shots, all of which Vasiliou saved. In the second half, Hurd recorded two of the Lyons' four second-half goals, while the visitors were led by three scores from sophomore Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional).

Sophomore Casey Logan (Scituate, MA/Thayer Academy) was credited with two second-half goals in the loss. In goal, Vasiliou stopped nine shots, while Wellesley junior goalie Karyn Benson (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) finished the contest with six saves. The Lyons held a 28-14 shot advantage in the win.

Wheaton will next travel to Hartford, Connecticut on Thursday, April 14 to take on 16th-ranked Trinity College in a non-conference evening game set for 6:00 p.m.
