Wheaton downs Springfield, 11-4 to gain sole possession of first place in NEWMAC, Pisano becomes school's all-time leading scorer

April 9, 2005

NORTON, MA- Senior All-America attack Vanessa Pisano (Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard) became the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team's all-time leading scorer while surpassing the coveted 300-point milestone Saturday afternoon, leading the 11th-ranked Lyons to an 11-4 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Springfield College at Keefe Field.

Wheaton gained sole possession of first place in the conference and extended its NEWMAC winning streak to 13 games with today's victory, improving to 6-2 on the season and an unblemished 3-0 in the NEWMAC. Springfield falls to .500 with an overall record of 4-4 and 2-1 mark in the conference.

Springfield senior Spring Silverman (Huntington, PA/Acad. New Church) opened the game's scoring with a goal three minutes into regulation, but the Pride wouldn't score again for nearly 37 minutes, as the hosts held a 6-1 halftime advantage and an eventual 9-1 lead.

Pisano and junior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) carried the bulk of the Lyons' scoring load in the opening half, accounting for five of Wheaton's first six goals. Pisano reached the 300-point mark with a goal 5:56 into regulation and surpassed it two minutes later on a feed to Coit. Pisano's five-point first half also placed her ahead of Lauren Maynes '04 on the school's all-time scoring list. Maynes now stands second overall with 303 career points, while Pisano is the leader with 305 points to date.

The Pride narrowed their deficit to five goals at 9-4 with under eight minutes remaining and Wheaton completed the scoring with two tallies in the final two minutes of play. Pisano, Coit and first-year Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) each finished with three goals, while freshman Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) recorded two tallies for the Lyons.

Wheaton senior goalkeeper A.J. Vasiliou (Middletown, CT/Mercy) had an impressive first half to finish with six saves in the victory, while Springfield first-year goalie Kristin Vaccaro (Southington, CT/Southington) was credited with 11 stops.

The Lyons remain at home this Tuesday for a conference game against Wellesley College at 4:00 p.m.
