Wheaton opens Pilgrim League slate with 14-5 road loss to Springfield

March 29, 2008

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team stayed close with host Springfield College during the first half of Saturday afternoon's Pilgrim League opener before falling by a 14-5 count at Stagg Field. The Lyons slipped to 2-4 overall, while the Pride improved to 3-4.

Scoreless action ensued for just over half of the first period before Wheaton tacked on a pair of quick scores just 57 seconds apart, as sophomore Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) and junior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) each found the back of the net. Following a Springfield goal at 5:29, Lyon freshman Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) converted sophomore Tim Horan's (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) pass for a 3-1 lead. The hosts managed to even the score with two tallies within 43 seconds, including a goal at the nine-second mark.

Springfield carried that momentum into the second quarter, scoring four straight goals to cap a 6-0 run for a 7-3 advantage. Junior Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick) had two tallies during the spurt. Wheaton senior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) notched a man-up goal to bring the Lyons within three, but Montgomery scored for a third time to give the Pride an 8-4 halftime edge.

Montgomery tallied yet again to begin the third period, and Springfield added a pair more to lead 11-4 with 10:02 to go. Rasamny made it a six-goal deficit with his second tally at 9:06, but the Pride finished the scoring with the game's last three goals.

Sophomore goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) was credited with eight stops for Wheaton.

Montgomery and sophomore Kyle Gable (Somers, CT/Somers) connected on four goals each, while sophomore Joe Macchi (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) posted a hat trick. Montgomery and senior Greg Welch (Peabody, MA/Peabody) added two assists each. Junior goalie Tom Albano (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) turned aside 11 shots in 54:12.

The Lyons travel to Keene, New Hampshire, on Tuesday to face nationally-ranked Keene State College at 4:00 p.m. The Owls are tied for 19th in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll.
