Lyon rally comes up short during loss at Eastern Connecticut State

March 22, 2008

WILLIMANTIC, CT- Despite a four-goal, fourth-quarter rally, the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team was unable to overcome Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, falling by a 10-6 final on Nevers Field. The Lyons dropped to 1-3, while the Warriors are 2-4.

The hosts led 3-0 after the first period before a pair of face-off specialists help pull Wheaton within a goal, as sophomore Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School) scored at 13:30 of the second quarter and junior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) assisted freshman attack Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) just 22 seconds later.

From there, Eastern Connecticut State took over, tallying seven consecutive goals by the 10:05 mark of the fourth period. After holding a 5-2 edge at halftime, the Warriors blanked Wheaton in the third, 4-0. The Lyons got back on the board with 8:14 to go in the game on a man-up goal by Landers, and first-year Bobby Barry (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) tallied his first collegiate goal 27 ticks later. Landers completed a hat trick at 4:24, and senior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) got into the act with 50 seconds remaining.

Landers led Wheaton with three goals, while Rasamny turned in a goal and a helper. The Lyons outshot the Warriors, 40-30, buoyed by a 13-3 advantage in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made six saves.

Junior Matthew Savage (Southington, CT/Southington) led Eastern Connecticut State with three goals, while senior Pete Hamilton (Rutland, VT/Rutland) and sophomore Vinny Tornatore (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) each added two goals and an assist. Freshman Brendan Hoppey (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) scored twice, and junior Kyle Savage (Southington, CT/Southington) made 11 saves in a little more than 49 minutes of work.
