Lyons drop season opener at nationally-ranked Villa Julie

March 12, 2008

OWINGS MILLS, MD- During its first contest under new head coach Mike McCaffrey, the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team trailed nationally-ranked Villa Julie College by only two goals early in the second quarter and by five at halftime before succumbing, 17-5 on Wednesday. The Mustangs, 18th in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll, are 4-1.

After Villa Julie scored three times during the opening 6:54 of the contest, Wheaton's defense bore down, holding the Mustangs scoreless for nearly 11 minutes. Freshman Chris Landers' (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) first collegiate tally 29 seconds into the second quarter brought the Lyons within 3-1, but the hosts wrapped their next five goals around another Landers marker during a 9:16 stretch to go ahead 8-2. Senior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) found the back of the net with Wheaton on a man-up opportunity 1:38 before halftime.

Villa Julie came out with the first four goals of the second half, as well as nine of the first 10, to squelch Wheaton's comeback attempt. Rasamny scored again during the third quarter before freshman Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) netted his first college goal with 57 ticks remaining.

Wheaton sophomore Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made seven saves during the opening half, while classmate Alex Lewis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) had six stops in the second stanza. Landers and Rasamny finished with two goals each.

Senior Kevin Donnelly (Laurel, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti) and sophomore Richard Ford (Baltimore, MD/Towson) led Villa Julie with four goals apiece, while junior Eric Fleegle (Easton, MD/Saint Peter & Paul) made eight saves in three-plus quarters to earn the win.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday at Colby College at 1:00 p.m.
