Wheaton men blanked in opening quarter in 14-5 loss against Springfield

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team trailed 3-0 after one quarter before dropping a 14-5 decision to Springfield College Saturday afternoon in Pilgrim League action at Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons fall to 3-8 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Pride improves to 6-8 on the season while remaining in second place in the Pilgrim at 6-1.

Springfield freshman Kyle Gable (Somers, CT/Somers) led the way with a game-best four goals and one assist, including posting the game's second score for a 2-0 Pride lead just 3:08 into the first. Junior Greg Welch (Peabody, MA/Peabody) gave the visitors a 1-0 edge 1:31 in, while classmate Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick) rounded out the first-period scoring at 10:43.

Junior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) got Wheaton on the board at the 11:22 mark of the second quarter before the Pride tallied twice for a 5-1 lead at 2:39. The teams traded goals in the final 1:15 of the opening half, as Lyon senior Markus Ricci (Wayland, MA/Wayland) scored to make it a 5-2 game. With nine ticks left, Gable found the back of the net as Springfield carried a 6-2 advantage into the half.

The Pride started the second half strong with four straight goals for a 10-2 lead with 1:26 on the clock. Four different players tallied goals during that stretch. Wheaton answered with two of the next three goals to narrow its gap to 11-4, but Springfield rattled off three straight during a 2:17 span to put the game away.

Wheaton senior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) had two goals and an assist, while Rasamny scored once with two helpers. Freshmen goalies Alex Lewis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) combined for four stops.

For Springfield, Gable had five points, sophomore Jake Beebe (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) totaled two goals and two assists, and classmate Jake Jones (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) assisted three times with one tally. Sophomore Jason Farrell (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) scored twice, while senior Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) finished with 10 saves.

Wheaton hosts Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a rescheduled game on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
