Lyons suffer first Pilgrim League defeat at Lasell, 14-10

April 14, 2007

NEWTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team suffered the first blemish on its Pilgrim League record, as the Lyons fell out of a first-place tie following a 14-10 loss at Lasell College's Grellier Field on Saturday. Wheaton dropped to 3-7 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Lasers are 4-6 and 3-2.

The teams traded two goals apiece to open the game, as freshman Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) drew Wheaton even at two with 9:55 remaining in the first quarter. However, three Lasell players scored in a 1:57 span to put the hosts on top, 5-2 at the end of one.

Wheaton countered with a trio of goals to open the second period, as sophomore Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and junior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) each scored with a man up 2:00 apart before Rasamny tied the game at five 7:07 before the half. Senior Chris LaBreche (Narragansett, RI/Narragansett) gave Lasell the lead back at 1:03, beginning a four-goal Laser run.

Early in the fourth quarter, Rasamny finished off a 3-1 Wheaton run with the final two goals in that span, as the Lyons trailed just 10-8 with 11:40 remaining. From there, Lasell kept the visitors off the board until 63 seconds remained, icing the win with four tallies in a stretch of 3:21.

Rasamny netted a career-high five goals while adding an assist, and Schaffer had a goal and two helpers. Gomer and senior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) recorded a goal and an assist each, and freshman Alex Lewis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) stopped six shots.

Freshman Brian Yepez (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) had four goals and two assists for Lasell, and senior Al Zayac (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) tallied a hat trick. LaBreche, senior Jeremy Davis (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) and sophomore Mike Maggio (Winchester, MA/Winchester) scored twice each. Junior Mark DeMieri (Seaford, NY/Seaford) made 11 saves.

The Lyons host league foe Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
