Rasamny's overtime winner sends Wheaton to first 3-0 league start

April 11, 2007

BABSON PARK, MA- Junior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) scored 1:39 into overtime to lift the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team past Babson College, 7-6 on Tuesday in Pilgrim League action on MacDowell Field. The Lyons remained tied for first in the conference thanks to their first 3-0 league start and improved to 3-6 overall. The Beavers fell to 5-4 and 3-1 after their third extra-session game of the season.

Wheaton's win was its second straight by one goal against Babson, as the Lyons pulled out a 6-5 decision last year, and the fourth consecutive meeting decided by two tallies or fewer.

Senior Markus Ricci (Wayland, MA/Wayland) converted a Rasamny assist 4:45 into the contest for a man-up tally that gave the Lyons a 1-0 edge, but Babson responded with three goals in a 6:03 span before going up by a 4-1 count with 5:19 remaining in the first half. However, senior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) and Ricci scored 1:14 apart right before halftime to bring Wheaton within 4-3 at intermission.

The Beavers took a 5-3 lead thanks to a man-up goal just 1:27 into the second half, but the visitors rattled off the next three tallies of the game to come from behind. Helms scored 1:35 after Babson's goal, sophomore Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) found the back of the net on the man advantage 1:38 later, and freshman Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) gave Wheaton a 6-5 lead with 3:37 to go in the third. Beaver sophomore Bryan Wilbur (Hingham, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) countered midway through the fourth quarter to force overtime.

During the extra session, Rasamny connected on Wheaton's lone shot for an unassisted marker. Helms led the Lyons with two goals and an assist, while Ricci scored twice. Rasamny added his marker and two helpers, and freshman Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) contributed two assists. Classmate Alex Lewis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) made 11 stops for his second straight victory in just his second collegiate game.

Sophomore Matt Harrington (Hanover, MA/Thayer Academy) paced Babson with two goals and two assists, while four additional Beavers scored once. Senior Nick Fessenden (Auburndale, MA/Taft School) provided a pair of helpers, and sophomore Max Owen (Hamilton, NJ/Pennington School) made 12 saves.

Wheaton remains on the road when it plays Lasell College in conference action on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
