Helms' five markers help keep Wheaton tied for first in Pilgrim League

NORTON, MA- Senior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) poured in a career-high five goals, and the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team remained tied atop the Pilgrim League standings with a 14-4 victory over Norwich University on Saturday in Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons are now 2-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Cadets fell to 1-4 and 0-3. Wheaton is 19-2 in its last 21 home games when scoring 10 goals.

The Lyons built an 8-0 halftime lead and had a 10-0 advantage before the visitors broke on the board. Helms, sophomore Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshmen Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School) and Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) scored in the first quarter, while Helms, sophomore F.J. Buckley (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshmen Sky Sabin (Katonah, NY/The Harvey School) and Conor Whitney (West Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) all tallied in the second.

Helms and Sabin scored 59 seconds apart to put the Lyons up 10-0 with 10:50 left in the third before Norwich scored the next three goals. Freshman Sam Glanders (Carmel, IN/Cathedral) put the Cadets on the board at 10:06, while junior Cody Hardenburgh (Long Beach, NY/JFK Bellmore) and sophomore Colin Smith (New Hampton, NY/NY Military Academy) tacked on the next two to bring the visitors within 10-3 at 1:49. However, Helms scored the first two goals of the fourth before junior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) tallied with 4:02 left to put Wheaton back up by 10. Hardenburgh and Schaffer exchanged the final two goals of the contest.

Helms also added an assist to finish with six points, while Sabin's two goals were the first two of his career. Buckley and Garceau also each found the back of the net for the first times in their respective college careers, and Schaffer had two goals and an assist. Rasamny tacked on four helpers in addition to his goal, while freshman Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) provided four assists. Freshman Alex Lewis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) made seven saves between the pipes in his collegiate debut.

Hardenburgh's two markers led the Cadets, while sophomore Joe Phelan (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) turned aside 20 Wheaton shots.

The Lyons continue Pilgrim play by visiting Babson College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
