Ricci's four-goal day lifts Wheaton to 9-5 win at Clark in Pilgrim opener

March 31, 2007

WORCESTER, MA- Senior attackman Markus Ricci (Wayland, MA/Wayland) and his four-goal performance paved the way for the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team's first victory of the season Saturday afternoon, leading the Lyons past Clark University, 9-5 in the Blue and White's Pilgrim League opener at Granger Field. Wheaton moves to 1-5 overall, while the Cougars fall to 2-3 and 0-2.

Following a scoreless opening quarter and nearly 10 minutes of the second period, the visitors finally broke the stalemate as freshman Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) converted junior Richie Rasamny's (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) pass at 5:06. The goal marked the first of three straight over a 2:10 span, as Ricci and sophomore Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North) added tallies for the Lyons. Clark scored its lone goal of the half with 0.4 ticks left.

Cougar sophomore Matt Fram (Methuen, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon) and freshman Garrett McAdam (Portland, ME/Portland) opened the third quarter with goals in the first 2:35 to knot the game at three. The Lyons responded to score four of the next five, including three straight during the final 3:18 of the frame to hold a 7-4 advantage heading into the final period.

Clark made it a 7-5 game just 1:05 into the fourth, but Ricci and Rasamny tallied at 5:46 and 2:56, respectively, while the Wheaton defense held the hosts scoreless the rest of the way. Rasamny finished with a goal and two assists in the win, while Schaffer and senior Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) added a tally and helper apiece. Freshman Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) had two stops through the first half to collect the win, while junior Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) made four saves in relief.

Junior Andrew Webber (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) paced Clark with a hat trick and an assist, while Fram added two assists to his tally. Sophomore goalie Tyler Campbell (Portland, OR/Lincoln) kept his team close, turning aside 21 of Wheaton's 35 shots.

The Lyons step out of conference play Tuesday when they face Keene State College in a rematch of last year's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship at home at 4:00 p.m.
