Lyon men suffer non-conference road loss at Endicott, 14-4

March 22, 2007

BEVERLY, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team saw host Endicott College post 11 of Thursday night's 12 first-half goals as the Lyons suffered a 14-4 setback to its non-conference foe at Endicott Stadium. Wheaton, which lost to the Gulls for the first time in five meetings, moves to 0-3 overall, while Endicott, playing in its second game in as many days, improves to 3-1.

Freshman Conor Whitney (West Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) kept the Lyons close in the early going, cutting Endicott's advantage to 2-1 with his first career goal at 5:23 of the first, which came 19 seconds after the hosts tallied their second goal. From that point, the Gulls scored three times during a 51-second span to capture a 5-1 lead after one. Endicott then outscored Wheaton, 6-0 in the second frame.

Wheaton seniors Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) and Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) sandwiched man-up goals around a Gull tally to bring the score to 12-3, but they proved to be too little too late as Endicott scored twice before Lyon sophomore Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North) rounded out the scoring with 23 ticks left in the fourth.

Helms and Rohan each had a goal and an assist to lead the visitors, while sophomore Nick Cosco (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) paced Endicott with four tallies and one assist. Senior Dan Ryan (Billerica, MA/Billerica) contributed three goals and two assists, sophomore Eddie O'Reilly (Beverly, MA/Beverly) had three tallies and one assist, and sophomore Brandon Dube (Danvers, MA/Danvers) added a goal and two helpers.

Wheaton junior goalkeeper Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) was credited with nine saves through the first half in his second straight start, while first-year goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) stopped three shots in the second stanza.

The Gulls used three goalies to combine for the win, including sophomore starter Sean Kearney (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), who picked up eight saves through the first three quarters.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday for a non-league game against Eastern Connecticut State University at 12:45 p.m. Originally scheduled to be played at Eastern, the game was moved to nearby Mansfield High School due to unplayable field conditions in Connecticut.
