Rasamny keeps Wheaton close before Lyons fall to Colorado College, 8-6March 14, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO- Junior tri-captain Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) played a hand in five of the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team's six goals Wednesday night at Colorado College as the Lyons dropped an 8-6 decision to the Tigers at Washburn Field. Wheaton falls to 0-2 on the young season, while Colorado College raises its overall record to 2-1. The Tigers got on the board first with goals from junior Hunter Combs (Denver, CO) and freshman Brendan Gangl (Lancaster, PA) at 10:31 and 8:15 of the first quarter, respectively, as the tandem combined for the team's first five tallies. Rasamny helped give the Lyons their only lead of the game at 3-2 after scoring twice and assisting on a goal from senior captain Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) with 11:13 to go in the first half. The hosts responded with four unanswered goals, including two from Gangl and one from Combs, to recapture the lead for good. The Tigers led 6-3 with just under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter, but a goal and assist from Rasamny brought Wheaton within one at 6:50 of the third, which turned out to be the final tally of the period. Neither team scored again until the 6:37 mark of the fourth, as Colorado College sophomore Charley Perkins (Manchester Center, VT) picked up the game-winning goal. Lyon freshman Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee) made it 7-6 1:23 later, but Combs gave the Tigers an insurance goal with his unassisted tally at 4:46. In an evenly played game that saw each team register nine face-off victories, Colorado College held a 30-20 shot advantage and 16-15 edge in ground balls. Rasamny finished the contest with three goals and two assists, while Helms added two tallies. Combs and Gangl each led the hosts with hat tricks, while junior Shawn Maloney (Walpole, MA) contributed a goal and an assist. Junior goalkeeper Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) accounted for 12 saves for the Blue and White. Senior goalie Chris Shopneck (Denver, CO) was credited with nine stops in the victory for the Tigers. Wheaton returns to the northeast Saturday to face New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Colby College. The game is slated to be played at Mansfield High School at 1:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 3/27/07. |
