Wheaton wins fifth in six tries, picks up 6-5 Pilgrim win over Babson

April 19, 2006

NORTON, MA- Senior Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) and sophomore Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) combined for five goals, and Rasamny assisted on Reavey's fourth-quarter game-winner as the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team rallied for a 6-5 Pilgrim League victory over Babson College at Mirrione Stadium on Wednesday. The victory was the Lyons' fifth in their last six games and first in 16 meetings with the Beavers since 1992.

The Blue and White, which is seeking its first conference tournament appearance since 1998, remained third in the league standings, as the top four teams gain entry into the postseason. Wheaton is 6-5-1 overall and 4-2 in the Pilgrim after winning consecutive games by one goal for the first time in program history. The Beavers are 2-9 and 2-3.

Babson senior Mike O'Connell (Dedham, MA/Noble & Greenough) tallied the game's first two goals 39 seconds apart in the first quarter. Reavey scored early in the second quarter before O'Connell finished off his hat trick with less than four minutes to go in the period, and the Beavers held a 3-1 halftime lead.

Reavey tallied at 9:38 of the third to pull the hosts within 3-2 and spark a five-goal run, as junior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School) knotted the score just 3:21 later. Rasamny scored off a Helms assist less than two minutes into the final quarter to give the Lyons their first lead before making the score 5-3 with an unassisted marker 59 seconds later. Rasamny then lent a hand on Reavey's third goal with 4:02 left, which gave Wheaton a 6-3 advantage.

Babson cut the final margin to one with a pair of late man-up goals, as freshman E.J. Peterson (Framingham, MA/Framingham) scored with 2:03 remaining and senior Nate Brawn (Topsham, ME/Cheverus) tallied 29 seconds after that.

Reavey finished with the hat trick, while Rasamny had two goals and an assist. Sophomore Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) made six saves for the Lyons. O'Connell was the only multiple-point scorer for the Beavers, who received seven saves from freshman Max Owen (Hamilton, NJ/Pennington School).

Wheaton travels to Norwich University on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. Pilgrim contest.
