April 12, 2006

BUZZARDS BAY, MA- Five players tallied as Wheaton College scored the final seven goals of the first half en route to a 10-7 Pilgrim League men's lacrosse victory at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday at Ellis Field. The Lyons improved to 4-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while the Buccaneers are 4-4 and 1-3 after losing their third straight contest.

Just 3:01 into the contest, sophomore Matt Sullivan (Marshfield, MA) gave Massachusetts Maritime a 1-0 lead that stood until Wheaton sophomore Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) knotted the game with 2:06 remaining in the first quarter and opened a seven-goal run. The Lyons outscored the Buccaneers, 6-0 in the second period to take a comfortable 7-1 lead at the half. Rasamny assisted senior Adam Cohen's (Montpelier, VT/Montpelier) go-ahead tally at 12:33, while Rasamny scored again and junior Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) notched a pair of markers during the stanza.

Massachusetts Maritime crept back into the game with a 3-0 third quarter, as the hosts tallied all three of their goals during a 2:55 span, culminated when sophomore J.P. Gabriel (Hingham, MA) scored at 11:13, to make it 7-4. However, the teams traded goals on three occasions during the final period, and the Lyons never led by fewer than three the rest of the contest.

Rohan led Wheaton with a hat trick, while Cohen and Rasamny each finished with two goals and an assist. Junior Larry Nussbaum (Glastonbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) contributed a pair of assists, while sophomore Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, CT/Governor Dummer Academy) made nine saves.
