April 8, 2006

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team saw its two-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons were handed a 19-9 loss at Springfield College's Benedum Field in Pilgrim League action. Wheaton falls to 3-5-1 overall and 1-2 in the Pilgrim, while the Pride collected its third straight win to improve to 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in league play.

Today's offensive performance by Springfield marked the first time in nearly three years that a Wheaton opponent had scored 19 goals, as the Pride rattled off six straight opening-half scores to take a 7-1 lead. Following a goal from Wheaton junior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) at 6:38 of the second quarter, Springfield responded with five consecutive scores to capture a commanding 12-2 advantage with 13:58 remaining in the third quarter.

Senior Adam Cohen (Montpelier, VT/Montpelier) made it an eight-goal margin with back-to-back goals, but the hosts answered with three straight tallies and never led by fewer than nine goals the rest of the way. Springfield held its largest lead of the game on a goal from freshman Chris Jez (Somers, CT/Somers) at 5:54 of the fourth that extended the Pride advantage to 19-7 before Lyon senior Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) scored twice over the final 2:05 of regulation.

Jackson paced the Lyons with a trio of goals and one assist, while Cohen and Helms rounded out the multiple-goal scorers with three and two, respectively. Springfield freshman Pat Cavanaugh (Wayland, MA/Wayland) totaled five goals and an assist, classmate Jake Beebe (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) accounted for a hat trick and four helpers, and sophomore Steve Krasco (Medford, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) was credited with four tallies and one assist.

Wheaton sophomore goalie Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) had 15 saves in the loss, while junior keeper Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) turned aside eight shots in just over 56 minutes of action for Springfield.
