Wheaton and Roger Williams battle to 7-7 draw after three overtimes

March 22, 2006

BRISTOL, RI- Junior Markus Ricci (Wayland, MA/Wayland) scored with one second remaining in regulation to force the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team into overtime with host Roger Williams University Wednesday afternoon, but after three extra sessions and the score knotted at seven apiece the game was called due to darkness.

Details in resuming play are being determined between the two schools. Wheaton had entered today's contest with an overall record of 1-3, while Roger Williams brought a 1-2 mark into play.

Wheaton was forced to come from behind on more than one occasion this afternoon, including a tying tally by senior Adam Cohen (Montpelier, VT/Montpelier) with 3:01 to play. Junior Larry Nussbaum (Glastonbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) was credited with the assist.

The Hawks responded a little over two minutes later. Coming out of a timeout, sophomore Slade Patterson (Needham, MA/Proctor Academy) scored off of a pass from freshman Sean Benner (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) with 57 ticks on the clock. After losing the ensuing face-off and seeing Roger Williams possess the ball for the next 30 seconds, the Lyons eventually forced a turnover that led to Ricci's late-game heroics.

The second half was no different from the opening stanza, as both teams battled back and forth before settling on a 4-4 tie heading into the break. The Hawks held a 4-2 lead late in the first half, but Wheaton put two quick scores together in the final two minutes of the second quarter to salvage the tie.

Ricci paced the visitors with two goals, while Nussbaum registered a pair of assists. Cohen had one goal and one helper and four other Lyon players were credited with one score each.

Benner finished the afternoon with a goal and two assists for the Hawks. Patterson, Benner, senior Joe Truncellito (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and freshman Dom Celeste (Jupiter, FL/W.T. Dwyer) each scored in the first half.

Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) finished with 17 saves, while Roger Williams sophomore goalie Bobby Hensley (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) had 19 stops.

The Lyons are scheduled to open Pilgrim League play at home this Saturday against Western New England College. The 1:00 p.m. game also marks Wheaton's home opener.
