Men's lacrosse drops 12-6 decision at RPI in season openerMarch 11, 2006 TROY, NY- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team fell by a 12-6 count at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday at Harkness Field during its first contest under first-year head coach Peter Toner. The Lyons tallied the first goal before 1-1 RPI replied with five straight tallies to take control. Wheaton crept to within 5-3, but the Red Hawks reestablished their four-goal cushion and never led by fewer than three goals the rest of the way. Wheaton won 15 of 21 face-offs during the contest, and sophomore goalie Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) turned aside 19 shots. Senior Adam Cohen (Montpelier, VT/Montpelier) notched a pair of goals, while classmates Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) and Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) and juniors Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) and Markus Ricci (Wayland, MA/Wayland) each tallied once apiece. RPI held a commanding 46-27 advantage in shots while scoring three times in nine man-up opportunities. Seven Red Hawks netted goals during the contest, led by sophomore Jamie Merritt's (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) four markers. Junior Ryan Michels (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made 13 saves.
