Wheaton's halftime lead slips away as Babson edges visiting Lyons, 11-9

April 21, 2005

BABSON PARK, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team saw its 7-4 halftime lead slip away at Babson College Thursday night, as the Beavers erased their three-goal deficit en route to an 11-9 come-from-behind victory over the Lyons in a critical Pilgrim League contest.

Falling to 4-7 on the season and 1-5 in the Pilgrim, Wheaton is now out of contention for the upcoming Pilgrim Tournament, as the nine-team league only takes the top four squads. The Beavers are still in the hunt for a tournament berth with a 3-2 league mark and 6-6 record overall.

Both teams traded the game's first five goals in the opening period, with the Lyons capturing the fifth on a tally from junior John Sharry (Westwood, MA/Westwood) with 1:31 left in the quarter. Babson eventually pulled even at 4-4 on a goal by first-year Ed Baran (Danbury, CT/Brunswick School) with 11:55 to play in the second period, but Wheaton reeled off three straight tallies to close the half with a 7-4 advantage.

The second stanza proved to be a tale of two halves for the visiting Lyons, as the Beavers outscored Wheaton, 5-0 in the third quarter alone to change the makeup of the game. Junior Mike O'Connell (Dedham, MA/Noble and Greenough) was credited with the game-tying goal with 12:48 remaining, and sophomore Nick Fessenden (Auburndale, MA/Taft School) followed with two straight to put the hosts in front, 9-7.

Senior co-captain Jared Connell (Yarmouth, ME/Phillips Exeter) made it a three-goal game in the fourth quarter, as senior co-captain Dave Frascogna (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) held the Lyons to a pair of goals the rest of the way. Wheaton junior captains Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) and Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) each recorded two goals and one assist in the loss.

For Babson, junior Nate Brawn (Topsham, ME/Cheverus) led the way with three goals, while Baran, Connell and Fessenden added two goals apiece. Wheaton sophomore goalie Nick Jones (Hamden, CT/Hamden) was impressive with 23 stops, while Frascogna turned away 15 shots.

Wheaton will conclude its home slate on Saturday, April 23 with a Pilgrim League contest versus Norwich University at 1:00 p.m.
