Lyons earn first Pilgrim League victory with 17-8 triumph over Massachusetts Maritime AcademyApril 13, 2005 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team posted its first Pilgrim League victory of the season Wednesday afternoon, as the Lyons handed Massachusetts Maritime Academy a 17-8 loss at Mirrione Stadium. Wheaton improves to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in league play, while the Buccaneers fall to 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Pilgrim. Wheaton and Massachusetts Maritime exchanged goals in the opening period, with the Lyons holding a slim 2-1 edge heading into the second. The hosts broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Buccaneers, 5-1 en route to a comfortable 7-2 halftime advantage. Junior Adam Cohen (Montpelier, VT/Montpelier) and freshman Sean Agoliati (Poughkeepsie, NY/Loomis-Chaffee School) led the Lyons with two goals apiece in the opening half, while sophomore Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School) had two assists. The Blue and White extended their lead to 11-4 after three quarters of play. Buccaneer sophomore Zach Condon (Needham, MA/Holliston) accounted for both of Maritime's goals in the period. Wheaton then outscored the visitors, 6-4 in the fourth to complete the scoring. Nine different Lyons posted goals in the victory, led by Cohen's game-best four tallies. A surging Helms finished the contest with two goals and three assists. Agoliati, junior Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow), sophomore Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) and first-year Ted Maturo (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) each scored twice, while junior Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) dished out two assists with one goal. Condon, junior Joe Bushy (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) and freshman Matt Murray (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) had two tallies in the loss. Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Jones (Hamden, CT/Hamden) was credited with nine saves in 40 minutes, while first-year Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer) had three stops in his first action this season. For Massachusetts Maritime, junior Dan Nelson (Winchester, MA/Winchester) and sophomore Robert Bailey (Plymouth, MA/Falmouth Academy) combined for 12 saves in the loss.
