Defending league champion Springfield fends off Wheaton, 12-8 in Pilgrim home opener

April 9, 2005

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team was tied 5-5 at halftime against Springfield College Saturday at Mirrione Stadium, but the Pride outscored the Lyons, 7-3 in the second stanza to capture a 12-8 victory in today's Pilgrim League home opener. Wheaton slides to 3-5 overall and remains winless in the Pilgrim at 0-3, while Springfield evened its record to 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in league play.

For the second consecutive game, sophomore attack Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School) gave the Lyons a lift offensively, scoring three of Wheaton's first four goals to keep the hosts close. In the opening half, both teams battled back-and-forth through multiple lead changes. Helms tallied the first goal, but the Pride's Derek Pedrick (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and Steve Krasco (Medford, MA/Governor Dummer) responded with a goal apiece for a 2-1 Springfield lead. The two teams exchanged goals the rest of the half, as Wheaton and Springfield entered the intermission deadlocked at five.

In the second half, sophomore midfielder Larry Nussbaum (Glastonbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) put the Lyons in front with a rifling shot past Springfield sophomore goalie Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) with 13:34 remaining. The Pride responded with three unanswered goals over a four-minute span to take an 8-6 edge and the lead for good. Senior attack Lars Keil (Andover, MA/Andover) made it a 9-6 game with his second goal of the afternoon with one tick on the clock. The visitors then outscored Wheaton, 3-2 in the fourth to secure the win.

Helms registered a game-high tying four goals on the day, while senior Trevor Ogden (New Canaan, CT/The Gunnery School) rounded out Wheaton's multiple-goal scorers with a pair of tallies. Junior Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) added two assists in the loss. Pedrick paced Springfield with four goals and Krasco amassed two goals and two assists. Keil finished the game with a trio of scores and graduate Craig Gibson (South Salem, NY/John Jay) had two assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Jones (Hamden, CT/Hamden) was impressive in net for the Lyons, recording 10 stops in the first period alone and 23 saves in the game. Cloutier was also solid with 16 stops.

The Lyons are in the midst of a four-game home swing and will return to Mirrione Stadium this Wednesday afternoon against league opponent Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 4:00 p.m.
