Huge first half lifts Lyons to 12-3 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology

April 7, 2005

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-0 halftime advantage en route to a convincing 12-3 non-conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) in Thursday afternoon's home opener at Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons move to 3-4 on the season, while the Leopards slip to 1-5 overall.

Sophomore attack Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School) and freshman midfielder Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) spearheaded Wheaton's attack in the opening half with three and two goals, respectively. The Lyons took a 1-0 advantage two minutes into the game on the strength of junior captain Taylor Jackson's (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) goal. The game remained a one-goal margin until Rasamny notched back-to-back tallies for the 3-0 edge. Sophomore Markus Ricci (Wayland, MA/Wayland) and Helms rounded out the scoring in the first period, leading Wheaton to a 5-0 cushion heading into the second.

Helms accounted for both of Wheaton's goals in the second period while the Lyon defense, consisting of senior captain Josh Fredrickson (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and juniors Geoff Estilow (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) and Kris Koerber (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick), stymied the Wentworth attack for 30 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Jones (Hamden, CT/Hamden) was credited with six stops in the first-half shutout.

Wentworth captain Mike Wood (Wilton, CT/Wilton) converted the team's first goal over five minutes into the third period to make the score 7-1, but the Lyons responded with two additional tallies for a 9-1 advantage entering the final stanza. Wheaton extended its margin to 10-1 in the fourth, as junior captain Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) picked up the first of his two goals in the period.

Helms finished the contest with three goals and one assist, while Rasamny had two tallies and one helper. Reavey and Ricci registered two goals apiece and sophomore Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) had one goal and two assists. Classmate Larry Nussbaum (Glastonbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) added two assists in the victory.

Junior Michael Black (Lowell, MA/Lowell) was credited with two of Wentworth's goals in the second half. As for the goalkeepers, Jones recorded 12 stops for the Lyons and junior Rich Hamaty (Hingham, MA/Hingham) registered 20 saves for the Leopards in the loss.

Wheaton remains at home on Saturday to face Pilgrim League champion Springfield College at 1:00 p.m.
