Wheaton overcomes halftime deficit and defeats Plymouth State, 11-9

March 29, 2005

MANSFIELD, MA- Wheaton College turned a 5-4 halftime deficit into an 11-9 victory against Plymouth State University in Tuesday night's non-conference men's lacrosse action at Mansfield High School. Scheduled to be played at Wheaton's Mirrione Stadium, the game was moved to Mansfield due to unplayable field conditions. The Lyons and Panthers are both 2-3 after tonight's contest.

The first half was a tale of two periods, with the Lyons sprinting out to a 4-0 lead before the Panthers answered with five goals and a 5-4 edge at the intermission. Junior captain Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) figured in three of Wheaton's four goals with two tallies and one assist. Junior John Sharry (Westwood, MA/Westwood) and sophomore Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School) accounted for the other two Lyon goals that gave Wheaton a 4-0 advantage.

Plymouth State junior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) converted a pass from junior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, MA/Woburn) to put the Panthers on the board before the first quarter ended. The second period belonged to Plymouth, as the Panthers outscored the Lyons, 4-0 on the strength of back-to-back goals from freshman Adam Krinsky (Concord, NH/Concord). Dabrieo and junior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) added the other two tallies in the frame.

The second half began very similar to the opening stanza, with Wheaton reeling off three straight goals for a 7-5 lead, but Plymouth once again battled back in the tail end of the third quarter, scoring consecutive tallies including one with four seconds left to knot the score entering the fourth. The Lyons got the better of the Panthers in the final period, tallying four of the game's six goals to secure the win.

Reavey led Wheaton with three goals and one assist, while junior captain Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) turned in a pair of goals and one assist. Sharry finished the game with two goals, while Helms and sophomore Larry Nussbaum (Glastonbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) had one goal and one assist each. Krinsky led all scorers with four goals for Plymouth, while Gagnon contributed with two tallies. Sophomore Nick Jones (Hamden, CT/Hamden) posted 10 stops in net for the Lyons, while Panther sophomore goalkeeper Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) had 19 saves.

Wheaton will look to even its Pilgrim League mark this Saturday at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as the Lyons and Engineers are slated for a 1:00 p.m. start in Cambridge.
