Lyons open Pilgrim League play with 13-3 setback at Western New EnglandMarch 26, 2005 SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team opened Pilgrim League play this afternoon with a 13-3 setback at Western New England College's Golden Bear Stadium. The Lyons fall to 1-3 overall with the loss, while the Golden Bears snapped a two-game losing skid to move to 4-2. Sophomore Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School) gave Wheaton an early 1-0 lead at the 11:11 mark of the opening period. The host responded with a pair of goals for a 2-1 edge at the end of one and then outscored the Lyons, 5-0 in the second to hold a comfortable 7-1 advantage at the break. Wheaton was held scoreless for nearly 28 minutes from the first through third quarters, as Western New England held a 6-2 goal margin in the second half. Junior captain Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) accumulated two goals for the Lyons. The Golden Bears were led by senior C.J. Annunciata (Waltham, MA/Waltham), who totaled a goal and four assists. Sophomore Adam Cherry (Westfield, MA/Westfield) contributed four goals, while junior Joe Cassani (Barre, VT/Spaulding) and senior Patrick Matthews (Middle Island, NY/St. Anthony's) accounted for three and two tallies, respectively. Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Jones (Hamden, CT/Hamden) posted 20 saves in Wheaton's net, while Western New England's Chris Body (Newtown, CT/Newtown) was credited with 12 stops in the victory. The Lyons return home on Tuesday, March 29 for a non-conference game versus Plymouth State University. Wheaton's home opener at Mirrione Stadium is set for a 4:00 p.m. start.
