Ten event wins highlight Wheaton's competition at Coed Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MA- Ten first-place showings highlighted the Wheaton College men's and women's indoor track and field teams' competition at Saturday's non-scoring Coed Invitational at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Lyons also met a pair of NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standards during the event, which was held at Shobrys and Aronson Track.

Seven of Wheaton's victories came on the women's side, as junior Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) won the 55- and 200-meter dashes in 7.40 and 25.69, respectively. Sophomore Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) came in second during the 200M and joined Ezeigwe, junior Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) and freshman Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) on the winning 4x200-meter relay quartet, which clocked in at 1:46.28. Jamiel was the runner up in the 55-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Kelly Libert (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) won the 400-meter dash in 1:00.55, followed by junior Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) in second. Junior Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) won the 3,000-meter run in 10:59.02, while classmate Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) had a runner-up showing in the 1,000-meter event. During the 4x800-meter relay, Calderwood, Jules, senior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) and sophomore Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) combined on a second-place finish.

In the field, a pair of freshmen won events, as Diana Kornberg's (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) shot put toss of 42' 1 1/4" provisionally qualified her for the national championship. Erin Neville (North Providence, RI/La Salle Academy) topped the high jump field at 5' 3 3/4".

Sophomore Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) had the men's team's lone individual win on the track, taking first in the 55-meter dash in 6.65. He was also the runner up in the 200-meter event. During the 4x400-meter relay, junior Albi Skenderi (Glendale, NY/Grover Cleveland), sophomore Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and freshmen Nick Colantuono (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) combined to win in a time of 3:26.83. Powell produced a runner-up showing in the 55-meter hurdles.

Wheaton's 4x800-meter relay foursome came in second, as freshmen Matt Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro), Colin Fahey (Waltham, MA/Weston), Nick Kacher (Waltham, MA/Waltham) and Brandon Waltz (South Thomaston, ME/Rockland District) comprised the team.

Freshman Marcus Kohlman (Milton, MA/Milton) won the high jump at 6' 3 1/4", while junior Kyle Greenidge (Dorchester, MA/Newton North) reached 45' 11 3/4" during the triple jump, surpassing a provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA meet while finishing third.

Wheaton athletes return to action next weekend, as the majority will attend the United States Track and Field (USATF) New England Championship on Sunday at Harvard University. A handful will also compete at the USATF National Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, while others will take part in the Division III New England Championship at Smith College.
