Pair of NCAA qualifiers pace Wheaton at Armory meet

February 4, 2006

NEW YORK, NY- Wheaton College met a pair of NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standards as the Blue and White's men's and women's indoor track and field squads competed in the sixth annual New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the New York City Armory in a non-scoring meet. Athletes from more than 80 teams from around the country were expected to compete, including from a number of high-profile Division I programs.

Both of Wheaton's NCAA provisional qualifiers came during women's events, as junior All-American Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) leaped 5' 5" in the high jump, tying for the second-best height at the meet, and recorded an NCAA provisional mark for the fourth time in five weeks. Harlow also came within 0.8 seconds of qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles. During the 4x400-meter relay, the Blue and White's freshman quartet of Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy), Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) surpassed an NCAA provisional time with a 3:59.06 finish.

Ezeigwe also shined in a trio of individual events, nailing down an 8.03 finish in the 60-meter dash, just 0.18 seconds shy of meeting the NCAA provisional standard, before finishing as the top Division III athlete in the 400-meter dash in 59.41. During the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash, Ezeigwe's time of 25.69 was less than a second off the program record and just 1.3 seconds behind the last finals qualifier.

Whitley closely followed Ezeigwe in the 60-meter dash at 8.12, finishing 0.27 seconds off an NCAA provisional time. Wheaton's distance medley relay team, comprised of Calderwood, Jules, senior Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) and sophomore Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro), finished 0.49 seconds off an NCAA provisional time with a 12:18.89 showing.

For the Wheaton men, freshman Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) completed the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash in 7.11, just 0.13 seconds off an NCAA provisional time and 0.19 ticks off behind the last finals qualifier in the event. In the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, classmate Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) recorded a finish in 8.61, missing the finals by just 0.22 seconds and an NCAA provisional time by 0.32 seconds.

Senior Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) completed the 400-meter dash in 49.63, just 0.43 seconds off an NCAA provisional time. During the 200-meter dash competition, Sisodia finished 0.62 seconds off a school record in 22.54. Wright nearly matched that, posting a time of 22.65. Cunha, Wright and first-years Phillip Kiley (Medfield, MA/Medfield) and Victor Martinez (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) teamed up for a 3:22.53 finish in the 4x400-meter relay, coming within 3.27 seconds of placing in the top 10.

Both Lyon squads return to competition next weekend at the Valentine Invitational, hosted at Boston University on Friday and Saturday.
