Wheaton opens season at Amherst, Reddy takes second in women's raceSeptember 6, 2008 AMHERST, MA- Senior Lauren Reddy (Walnut Creek, CA/Carondelet) finished second at the Amherst College Invitational on Saturday, when the Wheaton College men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2008 seasons. The Lyon women came in third among six squads with 85 points, while the men were fourth out of four with 101 points. Amherst's men and women won each race with 30 and 43 points, respectively. Reddy, who finished in a time of 20:41, helped Wheaton place ahead of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart Smith College and a pair of Division II squads, Saint Anselm College and Merrimack College. Senior Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) came in fourth at 20:46, while classmate Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) took 14th in 20:55 during her first race since 2006 after studying abroad last fall. Each of the next four Lyons to cross the finish line were competing in their first collegiate event, with freshmen Monica Black (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown), Kimberly Nash (Tempe, AZ/McClintock) and Rachel Scavera (North Bend, OR/North Bend) each placing among the top 50. During the men's race, sophomore Matt Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) was Wheaton's top finisher, coming in 21st in a time of 18:36. The Lyons' second- through fifth-place runners all took between 29th and 33rd, with senior Scott Hafferkamp (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack), junior Miles Souza (Norton, MA/Saint Sebastian's School), sophomore Brandon Waltz (South Thomaston, ME/Rockland District) and freshman Todd Woodworth (Weston, MA/Middlesex School) all completing the course. Wheaton takes next weekend off before returning to action on September 20 with the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Invitational.
