Wheaton's Brousseau earns second NCAA Championship berth with 11th-place showing at New England cross country meet

November 11, 2006

SPRINGFIELD, MA- Wheaton College women's cross country junior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) qualified for next weekend's NCAA Division III National Championship with an 11th-place finish on Saturday at the NCAA New England meet hosted by Springfield College. At the Veterans Golf Course, the Lyon women placed 12th out of 48 teams with 335 points, while the Blue and White men were 24th out of 45 with 768 points. Williams College won the men's race with 57 points, and Middlebury College took home the women's title with 73 points.

Brousseau completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:23, placing as the top finisher from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in the process. She looks to become the first two-time All-American in program history, as Brousseau earned national honors at the national championship during her freshman year. She will take part in next Saturday's national meet, hosted by Wilmington College, at Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio.

Five additional Lyons cracked the top 100, as senior captain Jennifer Ziello (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) came in 70th, sophomores Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) were 80th and 86th, respectively, freshman Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) finished 88th, and junior Abbe Bosk (Narberth, PA/Springside) was 100th. Junior Jessie Buonaccorsi (Shutesbury, MA/Amherst Regional) also competed for Wheaton.

In his second career New England Championship meet, junior Pat Benson (Foxboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) turned in his second team-best finish. Benson paced the Lyons with a 63rd-place showing in a time of 27:12 after running the 8,000-meter course in 27:26 a year ago while coming in 96th. Wheaton was represented by five additional athletes, as senior captain Matt Peirce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional), sophomores Scott Hafferkamp (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and Dan Libon (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro), and freshmen Andrew Brunhofer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and Miles Souza (Norton, MA/Saint Sebastian's School) each competed.
