Benson, Brousseau lead Wheaton cross country at Amherst Invitational

AMHERST, MA- The Wheaton College cross country teams opened their 2006 seasons on Saturday at the Amherst Invitational, where the women placed second out of four teams and the men came in third.

The Lyon women notched 71 points, behind only victorious Amherst College, which totaled 19. On the men's side, the Blue and White racked up 68 points, only 10 more than second-place Merrimack College. The hosts earned the team title with 18 points.

Junior Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) paced the Wheaton women with a seventh-place finish, matching her placement at last year's event in a time of 20:29. The next three scoring Lyons placed within 44 seconds of each other, as junior Abbe Bosk (Narberth, PA/Springside) was 20th in 21:47, senior captain Jennifer Ziello (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) came in 21st at 21:52, and sophomore Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) was 23rd in 22:31.

In her first collegiate race, freshman Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) was 24th, sophomore Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) finished 26th, and junior Jessie Buonaccorsi (Shutesbury, MA/Amherst Regional) came in 29th.

On the men's side, junior Pat Benson (Foxboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) turned in a third-place showing with a time of 28:10, finishing behind only a pair of Amherst runners. Senior captain Matt Peirce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) was 16th in 29:57, junior Joe Fowler (Farmington, ME/Mount Blue) was 22nd in 31:08, and freshman Andrew Brunhofer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) was 29th in 32:08. Fowler and Brunhofer were each competing in their first collegiate races.

The Lyons return to action next Saturday in the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Invitational. The start time is set for 11:15 a.m.
