Brousseau leads women's cross country to runner-up finish at NEWMAC meet, men take seventh overall

October 29, 2005

NORTHAMPTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's cross country team posted a second-place finish at the 2005 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) meet, as the Lyons fell just short of their championship defense quest at Smith College's course Saturday afternoon. Wellesley College topped the 10-team women's field, while on the men's side Wheaton took seventh overall, as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) captured its eighth consecutive conference championship.

Sophomore All-America runner Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) garnered her second NEWMAC All-Conference accolade with a runner-up finish. Bettering her 2004 standing by seven placements, Brousseau covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:03.

Brousseau's performance was bolstered by a trio of Wheaton runners finishing within three seconds of each other, as freshmen Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) alongside senior captain Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) placed 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively. Sophomore Abbe Bosk (Narberth, PA/Springside) completed the Lyons' team scoring with a 24th-place result.

Also running for Wheaton were junior Jennifer Ziello (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield), sophomores Jessie Buonaccorsi (Shutesbury, MA/Amherst Regional) and Mary Ostrander (San Diego, CA/Francis Parker) and freshmen Megan O'Sadnick (Evergreen, CO/Evergreen), Lauren Reddy (Walnut Creek, CA/Carondelet) and Ruby Solomon (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs).

For the men, sophomore Pat Benson (Foxboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) led the charge with a 28th-place standing. Benson crossed the finish line of the 8,000-meter course in 27:51, while junior Matt Peirce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) wasn't far behind in 30th with a time of 27:59.

Senior Ben Haber (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and a quartet of freshmen in Scott Clark (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow), Scott Hafferkamp (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack), Dan Libon (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) and Blair Rossetti (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North) rounded out the men's runners.

The teams will return to action on Saturday, November 12, when the Lyons compete at the NCAA Division III New England Championship held at conference counterpart Springfield College.
