Cross country opens season with pair of fourth-place finishes at AmherstSeptember 10, 2005 AMHERST, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2005 seasons with a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Amherst Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Lyon women tallied 93 points on the day while the men posted a 97-point total. The host women captured the team title with 19 points and the Bates men were crowned champions with 26 points. Sophomore All-America Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) led the pack on the women's side with a seventh-place mark overall, crossing the 5,000-meter finish line in 19:57. A trio of newcomers followed Brousseau, as freshmen Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), and sophomore Abbe Bosk (Narberth, PA/Springside) took 21st, 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Rawson finished in 21:23, Calderwood in 21:27 and Bosk in 21:36. Freshman Lauren Reddy (Walnut Creek, CA/Carondelet) placed 36th overall while junior Jennifer Ziello (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) turned in a 39th-place result. Sophomores Jessie Buonaccorsi (Shutesbury, MA/Amherst Regional) and Mary Ostrander (San Diego, CA/Francis Parker School) rounded out the women's finishers. On the men's side, sophomore Pat Benson (Foxboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) posted a seventh-place standing in his first collegiate meet since running in last year's Amherst Invitational, covering the 8,000-meter course in 27:33. Junior Matt Peirce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) followed Benson with a 21st-place finish and time of 29:14. The next four Wheaton runners finished within seven placements of each other, led by freshman Evan Morse's (Newton, MA/Newton North) 31st-place result. Sophomore Alex Cook (Hanover, MA/Hanover) captured a 33rd-place finish while senior captain Eric Richardson (East Walpole, MA/Bishop Feehan) and first-year Scott Hafferkamp (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) took 36th and 38th, respectively. The Lyons return to action on Saturday, September 24, when they will travel to Boston's Franklin Park to compete in the Harrier Classic.
