Pyle and Brousseau earn All-America status for Wheaton cross country teams at NCAA Division III Championship

November 20, 2004

COLFAX, WI- Senior sensation Stan Pyle (South Portland, ME/South Portland) and freshman standout Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) made school history at the 2004 NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday, becoming Wheaton College's first male and female cross country tandem to earn All-America laurels at a national meet. Held at the Whitetail Golf Course, the championships were hosted by the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire.

Pyle, who picked up his second All-America performance in as many years, is the school's only male runner to have attended a national championship meet. He finished today's 8,000-meter course with a time of 25:15, which was good enough for 29th place overall among 215 competitors. Today's race marked the third appearance at a national meet for Pyle, who placed 20th his junior season and 57th during his sophomore campaign.

Advancing to the national championship after placing eighth at last weekend's NCAA Division III New England Championship, Pyle also earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference honors with his runner-up finish earlier this month. Pyle was the fifth New England runner to cross today's finish line, trailing runners from Williams College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Wesleyan University and Keene State College.

Brousseau made her own mark in the Wheaton annals today. The school's second female runner to qualify for this meet and first since 1986, Brousseau is also Wheaton's second female All-America performer. Lisa Baron '87 achieved All-America status in 1984, 1985 and 1986. Brousseau held the distinction of being the nation's top freshman finisher this afternoon, covering the 6,000-meter course in 22:21 while placing 30th overall in a field of 215 competitors.

Like Pyle, Brousseau advanced to today's national meet by virtue of an eighth-place finish at last Saturday's regional meet. At the NEWMAC Championship, she helped lead the Lyons to their first conference title after finishing ninth at the meet. Capturing NEWMAC All-Conference accolades, Brousseau's time today was the ninth fastest among her regional counterparts. She crossed the line after runners from Williams, Amherst College, Middlebury College, Wellesley College and Wesleyan.

In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA regions. Forty-seven individuals were selected to participate in the championships. All regions automatically qualify the first four individuals. Additional at-large berths (15) were awarded to those regions with the first 15 finishers in the previous year's championships.
