All-America Pyle captures individual championship at Amherst Invitational, men place second and women finish third

AMHERST, MA- Senior All-America Stan Pyle (South Portland, ME/South Portland) began the 2004 season right where he left off from the fall of 2003, as he captured the Amherst Invitational title with a time of 26:26.

Pyle led the men's squad to a second-place finish with 52 points, trailing champion Keene State and in front of NCAA national qualifier Amherst and Southern Maine. The women finished third with 85 points, falling short of Amherst and Keene State while edging Springfield.

In addition to Pyle, four Wheaton runners placed among the top 17 runners, including freshmen Alex Cook (Hanover, MA/Hanover) and Pat Benson (Foxboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) in eighth and 11th place, respectively with times of 27:55 and 28:19. Junior Eric Richardson (East Walpole, MA/Bishop Feehan) finished 15th in 28:28, while classmate Ben Haber (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) covered the 8,000-meter course in 28:43, good enough for 17th place overall.

Rounding out Wheaton's finishers was senior captain Joe Chadwick (Shelburne Falls, MA/Mohawk Trail Regional) in 26th in 29:27 and sophomore Matt Peirce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) in 32nd in 30:04.

For the women, senior co-captain Erin O'Brien (North Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) led the Lyons with a ninth place finish in 20:06, while first-year Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) placed 11th in 20:13. Senior Lindsay Whalen (Dedham, MA/Dedham) and sophomore Jennifer Ziello (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) were 21st and 27th, respectively with times of 20:54 and 21:47.

Also completing the race was freshmen Jessica Buonaccorsi (Shutesbury, MA/Amherst Regional) in 39th, Mary Ostrander (San Diego, CA/Francis Parker) and Tracy Buro (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan).
