Langevin and Leith named to NEWMAC All-Academic team

NORTON, MA- Eight Wheaton College student-athletes have been named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Academic team for the fall of 2003. Out of the ten member schools, 209 student-athletes received this honor.

Honorees must follow a certain criteria to qualify for such an award, including a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of the 2003 spring semester, attaining at least a sophomore year standing and be a competing member of the varsity team for the entire season.

The Lyons were led by the women's soccer team with three recipients, including juniors Erin Duffy (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) and Christy Schneider (Jonesboro, GA/Jonesboro) and sophomore Emily Lipsky (Whitestone, NY/Sacred Heart Academy). Women's cross country and women's volleyball had two representatives each.

Senior Anna Kratky (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne) and junior Caitlin Meloski (Medway, MA/Medway) are members of the volleyball team, while sophomores Christina Langevin (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) run cross country. Field hockey sophomore Leigh-Anne Cioffredi (Lebanon, NH/Lebanon) rounded out the squad.

Duffy spearheaded soccer's defense to a record-breaking season, as the Lyons notched a program-best 19 shutouts with a 0.32 goals against average. Starting in 24 games, Duffy also recorded three goals, two assists and eight points. Schneider posted three goals, seven assists and 13 points from her midfield position, while Lipsky recorded a 0.00 goals against average in 248 minutes of action in goal for Wheaton. The Lyons advanced to their second straight NCAA Tournament national quarterfinal, finishing their season with a record of 23-2 overall and 9-0 in the NEWMAC.

Playing in 31 matches and 113 games for the Lyons, Kratky ranked seventh in the conference and first on the team in digs per game with an average of 3.858 (436 overall). Used as an outside hitter, Meloski played in 24 matches and 64 games. Nagged with an injury for a good portion of the season, Meloski totaled 50 kills and 38 blocks. Wheaton posted records of 17-17 overall and 5-4 in league play.

Leith led the women's cross country squad to a third-place finish at the NEWMAC meet, as she captured All-Conference honors by placing sixth overall in a time of 18:37. Leith also had a solid performance at the New England Championship, finishing 37th overall. Langevin ran a strong race at the conference championship, posting a top 25 finish in 19:43.

Cioffredi started in 19 games for the field hockey team from the back position, assisting a defense to three shutouts and a 1.60 goals against average. She also posted one game-winning goal, three assists and a defensive save on the season. The Lyons posted an 8-12 record overall with a 2-6 mark in the NEWMAC.
