Spence and Leith lead women to Hayseed Classic team championship; Men finish third overall

GRAFTON, MA- Senior Kim Spence (Barrington, NH/Dover) and sophomore Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Watchusett Regional) led the Wheaton College women's cross country team to its first top team finish at the Hayseed Classic Saturday at Tufts University. Junior Stan Pyle (S. Portland, ME/S. Portland) propelled the men to a third place mark. The women's 35 points bettered host Tufts by a margin of 19, while the men tallied 108 points. Bentley captured the team title on the men's side.

On the women's side, the Lyons captured the top two spots and had an impressive four runners among the top eight finishers. Competing in her first collegiate cross country race, Spence made the most of her debut by topping the competition with a time of 19:15. Covering the five-kilometer course in 19:44, Leith placed second overall. Other top Wheaton finishers included freshman Jonatta Moore (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) in sixth in 20:13 and sophomore Christina Langevin (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) in eighth in 20:28.

Rounding out Wheaton's finishers were juniors Lindsay Whalen (Dedham, MA/Dedham) in 18th in 21:03, Emily Doenges (Milford, CT/St. Joseph) in 21st in 21:13 and Lindsey Degon (Palmer, MA/Palmer) in 28th in 21:39.

Pyle, who quickly returned to national caliber form following a leave of absence last season, crossed the finish line in the runner-up position at 26:25, 29 seconds behind individual champion Ryan Agnew of Bentley. Joining Pyle on the eight-kilometer course was four Wheaton teammates that finished within nine placements of one another, including senior Brian Donoghue (Holyoke, MA/Holyoke Catholic) in 32nd in 29:01, sophomore Eric Richardson (East Walpole, MA/Bishop Feehan) in 35th in 29:13, junior Joe Chadwick (Shelburne Falls, MA/Mohawk Trail Regional) in 38th in 29:31 and first-year Matt Pierce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) in 40th in 29:37.
