Cross country women take second at Tufts University Hayseed ClassicSeptember 8, 2001 The Wheaton College women's cross country team finished in second place with 64 points at the annual Tufts University Hayseed Classic Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons placed seven runners among the top 23 finishers to edge the host Jumbos by a single point. Connecticut College was crowned champion out of the five-team pool, with five of the first seven athletes crossing wearing Camel uniforms. Topping its team finish by one place from a year ago, Wheaton's first-year Erin O'Brien (Easton, MA/Oliver Ames H.S.) led the charge in her collegiate debut with a second place standing overall in a time of 19:57. Sophomore Katie Knowles (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow H.S.) and freshman Lindsay Whalen (Dedham, MA/Dedham H.S.) finished within one second of each other, resulting in 11th and 12th place, respectively. Senior tri-captain Danielle Huston (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North H.S.) and first-year Jen Walter (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury H.S.) rounded out the team's scoring with placements of 19th and 20th overall to nip Tufts. Also among the top 23 finishers were freshman Linsey Degan (Palmer, MA/Palmer H.S.) and junior Kristen Walton (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island H.S.), placing 21st and 23rd, respectively.
