Gingras provides strong outing during 8-0 Wheaton win over Bridgewater

April 18, 2008

BRIDGEWATER, MA- Junior Adam Gingras (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket) provided the nationally-ranked Wheaton College baseball team with 7.2 shutout innings, and the Lyons plated four runs in the sixth inning and single runs in four additional frames during an 8-0 victory at local foe Bridgewater State College on Friday at Alumni Park. The Blue and White, which is ranked ninth by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), is now 25-7, while the Bears fell to 14-10.

Freshman Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) provided Wheaton with what proved to be the game-winning run during the opening frame, lacing a two-out RBI double to the left field gap. The following inning, sophomore Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) led off with a two bagger, moved up on junior Nick Pecora's (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) sacrifice and scored on freshman Eric Laliberte's (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) suicide squeeze. An unearned run came across in the fifth to put Wheaton up 3-0.

Wheaton broke the game open in the sixth, scoring four times on four hits and a miscue. A pair of runs scored on an outfield error before senior Jake Yagjian's (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) groundout plated the third run of the frame. With two down, Munley sent a run-scoring single up the middle. The Lyons recorded the final margin with another unearned run in the eighth.

Gingras turned in a stellar performance on the mound, yielding just one hit to his first 11 batters and never allowing more than one Bear to reach base at a time. In fact, of the 27 batters he faced, only one reached second base, on a one-out double in the seventh with the Lyons up 7-0. Gingras went through only two 1-2-3 innings but saw his defense erase three runners on fielder's choice grounders and another on an inning-ending double play in the fifth. Gingras finished his 7.2-inning stint having yielded just four hits while striking out three and walking one. Sophomore Jon Shepard (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional) tossed the final 1.1 frames, allowing two singles.

Munley finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and one of Wheaton's three doubles, while sophomore Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Lieneck and Pecora each had two hits and scored once, while senior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) drew two of the Lyons' six walks.

Senior Dana Hansen (Hanover, MA/Hanover) led Bridgewater State with a 3-for-4 performance, while junior Tim Bonham (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) took the loss after yielding seven runs, including six earned, on nine hits in 5.2 innings. He walked four and fanned two. Three relievers combined on 3.1 innings of one-run relief.

The Lyons return to the diamond tomorrow for their third game in four days, as they oppose Brandeis University in Sidell Stadium at 12:00 p.m. In conjunction with the contest, Wheaton and Brandeis will don blue wristbands to promote awareness for the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC), which is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women, while the Lyons will also host a clinic for Little Leaguers from Norton Youth Baseball after the game.
