Profile

Striving to teach student-athletes to cherish the value of competitive tennis in a context that encourages their growth as individuals and productive, responsible members of society, head coach Lynn Miller has been fulfilling that commitment to excellence at Wheaton for 29 years.

She emphasizes that physical fitness is a life-long process and that one's athletic life does not have to end upon graduation. In conjunction with the ideals of a liberal arts college tradition, she also aims to maintain the integrity of sport and encourages players to value high ethical standards in competition.

Miller led the men's squad to an overall record of 11-7 during the 2008-09 fall and spring campaign, guiding the Lyons to a 3-2 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) mark and a spot in the league tournament semifinals.

In 2007-08, Wheaton earned a spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast poll during much of the year after reaching its third straight NEWMAC Tournament final in the spring of 2007. During the 2005-06 season, the Lyons drew their first ITA national ranking.

On the women's side, Miller guided Wheaton to an overall record of 14-5 in 2008-09 and a third-place league standing, the program's best since the 2003-04 school year. The Lyons finished with a double-digit win total in three straight seasons for the first time since 1993-94 through 1995-96.

A three-time conference coach of the year and the 2004 United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) New England Coach of the Year, Miller has posted an all-time record of 295-206-2 (.588) in women's tennis with 10-plus wins in 19 of 29 seasons while having individuals compete in the NCAA and ITA national tournaments. With the men, Miller has had 13 seasons of 10-plus victories over a 20-year span, boasting a cumulative mark of 201-121 (.624).

A Level I USPTA and United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR) certified tennis professional, Miller earned 2001, 2003 and 2008 USPTA New England Player-of-the-Year honors (45-and-over women's singles). Under Miller's direction, Wheaton was honored in 2000 as Educational Association of the Year by United States Tennis Association (USTA) of New England. A nationally-ranked National Standard Race (NASTAR) ski racer, the multi-talented Miller qualified for the collegiate women's tennis nationals and competed several times in the United States Women's Lacrosse Association (USWLA) nationals.

Since coming to Wheaton, Miller has played an important role in both teaching and coaching tennis. She is the director and head coach of the tennis camp at Wheaton, which is now in its 27th year. Miller also served as the head clinician for Wheaton's annual high school tennis coaches' clinic. In 1996, she was the coach of the USTA New England Zonal Team in St. Louis.

Miller, who earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Plymouth State University in 1974, was a two-time New England collegiate doubles champion. She was inducted into Plymouth State's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. Miller received a master's degree with a concentration in sports psychology from Penn State University in 1978.
