Samuel Austin Chapin

Samuel Austin Chapin was the brother of Mrs. Wheaton, and a Trustee from 1889-1890. While a young man, Chapin traveled to Michigan, where he was made a Brigadier General for valiant action in the Black Hawk War. Later he joined the Gold Rush to California in 1849.

Favorite brother of Mrs. Wheaton, Samuel Chapin was often given commissions by her to assist other members of their family. He and his wife lived with Mrs. Wheaton after their return from California in 1884. Always active in local politics, Mr. Chapin was largely responsible for the enclosing of Norton Green.

Chapin Hall was named for Samuel Austin Chapin in 1901.
