Faces Behind the Facades

Eiiza Baylies Chapin Wheaton, 1900

What is "The Dimple"? How did the Doll's House get its name? Who was Mary Lyon?

These and many other questions are answered in this historical tour of Wheaton's campus. Faces Behind the Facades contains information and pictures about Wheaton buildings and named spaces, and the people honored in their naming.

How to use Faces Behind the Facades
Buildings and named spaces (even if they no longer exist on campus) can be searched for chronologically and alphabetically. Follow the links to the left to explore the people and places who helped to build and define Wheaton College.

About Faces Behind the Facades
This project had its beginnings in an historical fieldwork paper written by Holly J. Bussey W1978 under the direction of archivist Ruth Andrews Fletcher W1935. Zephorene L. Stickney, the current archivist, and creator of this project, has been adding to and adapting Ms. Bussey's work since 1980. She has frequently used modern slides, and glass plate slides made for Wheaton's Centennial celebration in 1935, in a presentation by the same name. Kathy Ebert-Zawasky and Brenda Molden transformed the vision of this project into the reality of a website in 1996.

During the summer of 1998, "Faces Behind the Facades" was entirely redesigned and images added through a generous grant from The Frank M. Barnard Foundation. Funded by his grant, Travis Riley, Class of 1999, has scanned images and integrated them throughout the website, especially into "Faces Behind the Facades." The site was again revised during the summer of 1999 and 2009.
