Professor Hilary Haldane to Speak at Wheaton
Posted on April 16, 2012
On Thursday April 19th at 5pm in the Holman Room in Mary Lyon, Professor Hilary Haldane from Quinnipiac University will speak on "When Human and natural Disasters Collide: Understanding the Violence of Everyday Life."
In this presentation Professor Haldane will focus on her recent work in Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand, where the February 2011 earthquake devastated the city and surrounding areas.
As part of exploring how emergency situations contribute to, and can also produce, experiences of violence, both interpersonal and structural, this work has led her to consider more broadly the violence of everyday life, and what anthropologists can do to better understand why violence happens, and what we can do to stop it.
