For the Summer 2011, Kate Stanley '12 used her Davis Fellowship by working for two environmental advocacy organizations in Europe: INFORSE-Europe in Arhus, Denmark and Zelena Akcija in Split, Croatia. Reflecting on her experience Kate writes:
"In Denmark, I worked in an office and created promotional materials, researched some case studies on sustainable practices and updated the website. I also attended a week-long conference on resource efficiency in Brussels that was funded by the EU. In Croatia, I volunteered with the Croatian chapter of Friends of the Earth and helped with the logistics of three workshops. The workshops included topic such as alternative transport, sustainable energy, environmental protection and environmental activism."
Among the most instructive experiences Kate had this past summer was the organization of a youth workshop in Croatia which taught college-age people about how to install wind turbines, make a DIY solar thermal collector and attempted to make bio-diesel from vegetable oil.
As an anthropology student, Kate remarks that the Davis Fellowship allowed her not only to have significant cultural exchanges, but also gain of knowledge of environmental advocacy.
